According to a Khaleej Times report, sudden swerving and speeding were the leading causes of accidents on Dubai roads.
Statistics of the Dubai Police reveal that sudden swerving caused 426 accidents which led to 12 fatalities and 393 injuries in the last nine months this year, while speeding caused 25 accidents that claimed 6 lives and injured 28 people in the same period.
In a statement, Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of general department, revealed that a number of drivers were taking sudden turns and not conforming to the speed limits–two of the most common causes of accidents.
He added that other causes of deadly accidents include tailgating and lack of attention given to road users.
Al Mazrouei noted that speeding incidents were the key reason for the reduction of speed limits on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. The light vehicles and trucks as well as a huge number of motorists surpassed the speed limit which used to pose threats to road users.
He also stressed that there are several other intolerable behaviors of motorists that result in fatal accidents, such as driving in reverse. This resulted in 20 accidents, taking the lives of four people and injuring 11 others in the last nine months of this year.
The director also noted that the traffic police experts analyze the causes of traffic accidents and based on the results, prompt measures are taken to decrease them.
He even pointed out the negligence of some motorists in performing maintenance of their vehicles as the cause of a grave fallout, stressing that eight people lost their lives and 35 others got injured in five accidents when the tire of their car burst during the last nine months of this year.
Al Mazrouei concluded that it is necessary to inspect the car periodically, particularly the tires. He underlined that tires and all accessories must be purchased from authorized sellers.
