Jaguar Classic has good news for all vintage car lovers. The automaker is restarting production of its renowned D-type race car in Coventry 62 years after manufacturing the last example in 1956. Just recently, the first-ever D-Type it assembled, which is an engineering prototype, was launched at the Salon Retromobile show in Paris.

According to reports, only 25 new pieces of the D-type race cars will be built at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Warwickshire. The British automaker has planned to produce 100 D-type cars in 1955. Jaguar Classic has completed the production of only 75 cars and is implementing the original ambition of the company by creating 25 new period-correct sports cars.

The D-type won the Le Mans 24 hour’s race three times from 1955 to 1957 and consists of a 6-cylinder XK engine. Authentic and original specifications are the key features of the 2018 D-type sports cars.

Tim Hannig, Director of Land Rover classic said: “The Jaguar D-type is one of the most iconic and beautiful competition cars of all time, with an outstanding record in the world’s toughest motor races. And it’s just as spectacular today. The opportunity to continue the D-type’s success story, by completing its planned production run in Coventry, is one of those once-in-a-lifetime projects that our world-class experts at Jaguar Land Rover Classic are proud to fulfil”.

The D-type is considered as the 3rd continuation vehicle from Jaguar Classic. It complements the 6 missing Lightweight E-types which have been completed between 2014 and 2015 and nine XKSSs which have been built between 2017 and 2018.

Each new D-type will be built as per the authentic specifications laid by competitions manager Lofty England and his team in 1950s. Clients can choose from either the 1955 specification Shortnose or the 1956 specification Longnose bodywork.

Extended bonnet, characteristic tail fin behind the driver’s head, wide angle cylinder head and quick change brake calipers are the specifications of the 1956 Long nose specification.
