His Highness Sheikh Hamdanbin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of TheExecutive Council issued Council’s Resolution No (3) of 2019 which regulatesthe autonomous vehicle testing in Dubai. The new resolution which is one of thefirst such initiative in the region and also a part of the first phase of thelegislative framework created to ensure the highest efficiency, reliability andthe security of smart mobility.
As per the resolution, RTA is taskedwith reviewing the technical aspects and standards in relation with the safetyof the autonomous vehicles which will be included in the vehicle manuals.Moreover, this should be in compliant with the RTA’s autonomous vehicle testingrequirements. They will be also held responsible for providing licenses tooperators and overseeing their compliance with RTA’s regulations.
The Resolution will be effective fromthe date of its publication in the official gazette. The Dubai Autonomous Transportation Strategyobjects to alter 25 percent of the total transportation in Dubai to autonomousmode by 2030.
The strategy is expected to bring Dh22billion in annual economic revenues in several sectors by reducing transportationcosts, carbon emissions, and accidents. This also helps in raising theproductivity of the individuals along with saving hundreds of millions of hourswasted in conventional transportation.
